Read the sample collection steps
  1. Rinse with plain water 30 minutes before collection. Do not use mouthwash; during those 30 minutes, do not drink, eat, smoke or chew gum.
  2. Do not touch the swab tip. Rub the inside of one cheek 10–20 times, using enough pressure to make the cheek bulge slightly. Place the swab in the tube and discard the excess handle as shown.
  3. Use the second swab on the other cheek, again 10–20 times. Put both swab tips in the same tube, close it tightly and gently shake about 15 times.
  4. Seal the tube in the specimen bag and place it in the box. Return promptly. If return is delayed, the demonstrated kit instructions say to temporarily refrigerate the sealed package and arrange return as soon as possible.

What can the genetic modules tell you?

Explore the focus of each module and examples of the results it can cover. Included modules and individual items vary by product and version; confirm the exact scope of your chosen kit before ordering.

Ancestry Analysis

Explore estimates of your population ancestry, regional ancestry composition and Neanderthal ancestry.

Examples covered

  • Population ancestry composition
  • Regional ancestry composition
  • Neanderthal ancestry

Using the results: These are model-based ancestry estimates for personal exploration, not proof of nationality, ethnic identity or a specific family relationship.

Genetic Traits

Read about genetic associations with sleep patterns, sensory sensitivity and selected everyday traits.

Examples covered

  • Time taken to fall asleep
  • Sleep duration
  • Pain sensitivity
  • Mosquito attractiveness
  • Absolute pitch

Using the results: A genetic tendency does not measure your current abilities or predict how you will perform. Habits, learning and environment also matter.

Mental Health Traits

Explore genetic associations with mood-related tendencies, stress responses and selected personality traits.

Examples covered

  • Depressive tendency
  • Anxiety tendency
  • Stress resilience
  • Neuroticism-related tendency
  • Conscientiousness

Using the results: These reports do not diagnose a mental health condition or assess personal ability. Concerns about mood or anxiety need assessment by a qualified professional.

Nutrition Genetics

Explore genetic associations with nutrient metabolism, taste preferences and selected food-related responses.

Examples covered

  • Alcohol and caffeine metabolism
  • Folate metabolism
  • Vitamin-related reports
  • Sweet-taste sensitivity
  • Egg allergy risk association

Using the results: These reports do not establish a current nutrient deficiency or diagnose a food allergy. Discuss diet changes or supplements with a qualified clinician or dietitian.

Skin Genetics

Read about genetic associations with pigmentation, skin ageing, moisture retention and selected skin concerns.

Examples covered

  • Skin photoageing
  • Freckles
  • Acne susceptibility
  • Skin moisture retention
  • Scarring tendency

Using the results: Use the information to prepare skin-care questions; it does not measure your current skin condition or determine a treatment. Persistent skin concerns need clinical assessment.

Sports Genetics

Explore genetic associations with exercise-related weight response, strength, endurance and susceptibility to selected injuries.

Examples covered

  • Weight response to exercise
  • Weight response to dietary changes
  • Explosive power
  • Endurance
  • Rotator cuff injury susceptibility
  • Ankle sprain susceptibility

Using the results: This is not a fitness test or a personalised exercise prescription. Training, diet, existing injuries and other factors affect real-world performance and weight change.

Disease Susceptibility

Reports describe genetic susceptibility associations for selected common conditions, rather than checking whether you currently have them.

Examples covered

  • High blood pressure
  • Type 1 and type 2 diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Gout
  • Chronic kidney disease

Using the results: Genetic susceptibility is only one part of overall risk. A higher result is not a diagnosis, and a lower result does not rule out disease; review relevant findings with a clinician.

Cancer Susceptibility

Explore genetic susceptibility to selected cancers and what it can tell you about inherited risk.

Examples covered

  • Thyroid cancer
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Melanoma
  • Stomach cancer

Using the results: These reports do not detect a current cancer or replace recommended screening. Discuss family history and relevant findings with a clinician, including whether clinical genetic testing is appropriate.

Pharmacogenomics

Learn about genetic differences that can affect how certain medicines work and are metabolized. Examples include clopidogrel and warfarin; the medicines covered vary by package.

Examples covered

  • Clopidogrel
  • Warfarin
  • Nervous-system medicines
  • Anti-infective medicines
  • Anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic medicines

Using the results: A clinician or pharmacist must interpret any result alongside your medical history and other medicines. Do not use this report alone to start, stop, switch or change the dose of a medicine.

Chip Upgrade

Additional reports for the HSSA-v2 second-generation chip, covering 39 disease-related and 30 non-disease entries. Included reports vary by chip and package.

Examples covered

  • Additional cardiovascular and skin-related disease entries
  • Additional digestive and musculoskeletal disease entries
  • Additional nutrition, psychological and genetic-trait entries
  • Additional medicine-related reports

Using the results: This add-on expands the genetic information you can explore. Like the other consumer reports, it is not a clinical diagnostic test.
